My inspiration for this Portrait of Power was centered on Georgia O’Keeffe. While researching Santa Fe for an upcoming mentorship program, I was reminded of her iconic floral works and the profound influence she has had on my own early artistic journey. This sparked a deep desire to re-learn her process.
Upon further investigation, I was moved by the extensive archive of her works and the intimate portraits taken by her partner. I began to notice patterns in the elegant way she posed her hands over the decades; it was then that I knew I wanted to paint her portrait by highlighting those hands as a source of power. To revel in the many ways in which it is through the artist's own hands that great works of art can be birthed.
I chose the white iris as a pairing to represent the floral sensuality that initially drew me to her work. The water droplets on the petals represent the vitality of beauty in all forms—thirst, growth, and the act of savoring the mundane. This imagery was inspired by a reference photo I took after jumping out of my car on a cool, rainy afternoon, a literal manifestation of O’Keeffe’s philosophy: "Take time to look."
Each 8x10in illustration is printed on a textured, watercolor-like paper, and fitted within a 5x7in framing mat board. A logo and title are printed beneath the illustration, which is covered by the mat board. Each art print is backed and supported with a sturdy board made of 100% recycled material and is sealed in a protective sleeve - Just remove the sleeve and place directly into any 8x10in frame!
